Challenge:

Table games have long been a core offering in the online casino space, and at PokerStars, they’ve proven to be a valuable and essential part of the product lineup. However, with classics like blackjack, baccarat, and roulette having existed for decades, the creative challenge was clear: how do we bring originality to a category that’s been done countless times, while staying true to the gameplay users expect?

Adding to this, when I first joined PokerStars, Flash was the industry standard for online game development. However with the growing dominance of iOS and mobile platforms, where Flash was unsupported, there was an urgent need to rebuild and optimize these games in HTML5 to ensure cross-platform accessibility and long-term scalability.

Solution:

To elevate the user experience, we designed the table games with rich graphic textures and a deep sense of luxury, signalling PokerStars’ position as a premium, industry-leading platform. Our goal was to go beyond functionality and create an immersive, high-end gaming environment. We also introduced a community-driven layer to the experience—these weren’t just games played against faceless algorithms; players could engage with real opponents, adding a social dynamic that felt authentic and engaging.

Through close collaboration between designers and developers, we successfully ported nearly all features from Flash to HTML5 with minimal compromise. This transition not only maintained feature parity but also laid the groundwork for new enhancements that would soon follow.
